BY KYRA WILMES// Neon Indian returns to Washington, D.C. with his “Invasion Musical Total” tour at the 9:30 Club on Saturday, November 16th.
Alan Palomo, the synth-pop artist behind the project, most recently released the song “Heaven’s Basement” last December from the short film 86’d, which he wrote and directed. Palomo’s last full length album was 2015’s “Vega Intl Night School,” which built off of the shoe gaze and new wave influences of previous albums like “Psychic Chasms” and “Era Extraña,” to bring a funkier, more disco-leaning sound to Neon Indian.
Songs like “Polish Girl” were staples of the indie music scene in the early 2010s, yet it was the reinvention of Neon Indian’s sound during “Night School” that drew me in; Palomo has mastered the ability to mix classic 70s sounds with dreamy, futuristic beats to create the perfect electronic pop, with songs like “Annie,” “Slumlord,” and “The Glitzy Hive” making frequent appearances on many of my playlists ever since their release 4 years ago.
Having missed seeing Palomo multiple times over the years, both in D.C. and in my hometown of Dallas, TX (Palomo is also a Dallas-Fort Worth native, hailing from Denton!) , I’m thrilled to finally see Neon Indian at one of the District’s best venues. Joining Neon Indian is opener Sateen, comprised of Brooklyn-based nightlife queens and married couple Miss Sateen and Exquisite, who are known for their mixing of disco and glam rock and their exciting club kid visuals.
While we wait for the latest disco pop classics from Neon Indian, come out and see Palomo play some of the greatest hits from his ten year career this next Saturday at the 9:30 club!
