PREVIEW: Giorgio Moroder @ 9:30 Club 5/12

ANOUR ESA // “My name is Giovanni Giorgio, but everybody calls me Giorgio.” This is a line from Daft Punk’s 2013 track, Giorgio by Moroder, which has something to the order of 45 million hits on Spotify.

This was the first time I, a millennial had ever heard of Giorgio Moroder. I soon became enthralled with the story of this mysterious godfather of techno, and began listening to his music, old and new.

Well ladies and gentlemen, the man, the myth AND the legend is coming to DC, headlining the 9:30 Club this Thursday, and we couldn’t be more excited to take part in the Giorgio Moroder experience.

His music, characterized by strong synthesizer presence, use of the vocoder, and live instrumentation, has captivated millions of fans since the mid 70’s, with the legendary dance tastemakers Daft Punk even referring to him as a “foundation for modern pop music and dance music.

While he might have been at his most famous in the 70s and 80s, Giorgio Moroder isn’t letting the times get ahead of him. His newest album, titled Déjà Vu, includes collaborations with artists like Sia, Charli XCX, Britney Spears, Mikky Ekko, Kylie Minogue, and more.

This isn’t just a star studded album collaboration, it’s actually filled with incredible music that will have your body moving, grooving and dancing without control. After listening to Giorgio Moroder for a few years now, I’m convinced that the man is a dance music god.

To quote a track from the album, 74 is the new 24, and Giorgio wants you to know it. If you don’t believe me, go check out the man’s twitter game. It is absolutely on point. His music is even better. Want to find out just how good? Tickets for his May 12th show are on sale right now.

As the man says, “look at the bigger picture. The world. You are a disco ball, not just merely a shard of glass.”
