BY HANNAH BRADY// Cambridge based singer-songwriter Cavetown is set to play 9:30 Club in a show you don’t want to miss.
Cavetown is the alias of 20-year-old Robbie Skinner; an artist who started out by posting Twenty One Pilots covers on Youtube and self-releasing albums on Bandcamp in 2014. He soon rose to popularity after the video for his 2015 single, “This Is Home”, went viral, and has now amassed over 2.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Cavetown is now touring across the US, UK, and Australia after the release of his third album Lemon Boy, and his latest single Telescope.
His music is best described as bedroom pop-indie folk; combining simple ukulele ballads, lo-fi electronic tunes, and sweet, genuine, nostalgic lyrics. His songs that deal with themes of love, gender dysphoria, and coming-of-age are relatable to his strong fanbase of teens and 20-somethings, who he affectionately calls his ‘Caveclub’.
Personally, I am a new recruit to the Caveclub. I first heard Cavetown when he collaborated with one of my favorite artists, Sidney Gish, on his Animal Kingdom series finally, Jackson. The last of the five two-track splits features Gish’s cover of Somebody’s Baby by Jackson Browne and an original from Cavetown, Hug All Ur Friends. The track captured my attention with its title and solidified my interest with its sentimental, relatable lyrics and soft, building melody. Soon I found out this track is just one of many gems produced by this rising indie-rockstar.
Cavetown’s show on Monday is surely not one to miss, and I look forward to singing along to songs like Boys Will Be Bugs and Lemon Boy with his wholesome Caveclub.
