Moon Hooch at the 9:30 Club 2/22

BY ZACH MARTIN// Moon Hooch is an experimental, contemporary jazz group that has made their name a household one by mixing dance rhythms with a screechy, jazzy twist. The New York group has stood out with amongst peers due to their wombo combo of strong groves and abrasive saxophone shrieks, usually augmented by Hooch’s signature traffic cone rigged out of the horn. Moon Hooch’s self-released latest album, “Life on Other Planets”, released earlier this year, and as the title suggests, it sounds like the kind of dance jazz fusion that would be played at a club on a different planet.

Over the years, Moon Hooch has rallied a small but dedicated fanbase in no small part due to internet performances such as their NPR Tiny Desk appearance. With a handful of projects under their belt, they have been a mainstay in the small but competitive world of contemporary jazz. Moon Hooch is playing at U Street Music Hall accompanied by another New York band, Paris Monster, on February 22 and tickets are 20 dollars.
