Jaymes Young at U Street Music Hall, 11/24

BY PARIE BHANDARI// Jaymes Young, born Jaymes McFarland, started tinkering with guitar playing and music writing at age 14. His sound is an interesting mix of electronica, smooth indie R&B, and lush synth pop—but there is no doubt that he makes the combination work. He claimed that artists such as Radiohead, Iron & Wine, Death Cab for Cutie, and Coldplay were among his musical inspirations. McFarland was part of a small band called Corner State, which released a single album in 2010, before adopting the name Young and making his EP debut with Dark Star in 2013 after signing with Atlantic.

In 2014, Young released his second EP, Habits of My Heart. Before releasing his first album,

Young went on tour with London Grammar, opened for Vance Joy on his “Dream Your Life

Away” tour, was featured in David Guetta’s “I’ll Keep Loving You,” and co-wrote two tracks

with electronic musician ZHU that eventually played a role in the latter artist’s debut album.

Among Young’s released singles are tracks such as “I’ll Be Good” and “We Won’t”—personal

favorites of mine. On June 23 rd 2017, Young finally released his first album Feel Something.

In 2018, Jaymes McFarland decided to step away from his alternate persona and take a break for a while, promising to return. Lucky for me that he’s come back strong, having released his new single “Paradox” just less than a month ago. I first discovered Young’s hits like “We Won’t” and “Habits of My Heart” around four years ago and remember knowing instantly that I would be a fan. The sound that he creates is like none other I’ve ever heard before—mixing indie,

electronica, pop, and R&B all into one. I am beyond ecstatic to see him perform live on

November 24 th right here in D.C. at U Street Music Hall. Jaymes Young is definitely an artist to

keep an eye on—his unique sound and clear abundance of talent are bound to take him far.
