Electric Guest at the 9:30 Club 2/7

BY BIANCA TRINIDAD// Electric Guest is a funky and witty pop duo consisting of Asa Taccone and Matthew Compton. Formed in 2011, in Los Angeles, California, Electric Guest gained fans through their debut album, Mondo, which came out the following year, in 2012. It has since become one of their biggest hits, “This Head I Hold” (a favorite of mine). When Electric Guest first hit the scene, they were pulled towards the indie music scene that was taking over the early 2010s. But over the years, “...it’s been a gradual shift away from that,” according to Asa. “I think of us as more of a pop duo.”

Recently, Electric Guest’s pop style has emerged even more due to working with other artists such as Carly Rae Jepsen, Cold War Kids, Portugal, and The Man as can be heard on their newest 2019 album, KIN. In addition to their tried-and-true pop sound, the album also includes genre-blurring tracks, paving the way for the duo to find their true musical identity and sound.

The early 2010s was the peak of the indie music scene, with artists like Young the Giant, Small Pools, Passion Pit, Two Door Cinema Club, Vampire Weekend (still a great band), and the list goes on. So, while probably using Pandora at the time, my 12-year-old, middle school-self discovered and listened to all those indie artists, and Electric Guest was one of them. Like mentioned earlier, “This Head I Hold” is one of my favorite tracks, I still find myself listening to it quite frequently. - If you like to run, I think it’s a pretty good running song, or if you like to dance (in my case, jump around), it’s a pretty good song for that too. It is cool to see that Electric Guest’s sounds for their following albums have shifted into an eclectic pop style that they identify themselves with more. I am looking forward to hearing and seeing Electric Guest live at the 9:30 Club.
